Holly was graduating from Texas A&M in December with her degree in Biology, so she contacted me about a senior portrait session before her big day. Unbeknownst to her, Holly’s boyfriend Gerad contacted me a few days before the shoot to see if we could work a surprise engagement into the session! Of course I was all for this since I love having fun and doing anything I can to make each session memorable. And this was going to be a great one!
Planning the Surprise
Gerad and I decided downtown Bryan, after Holly’s campus session, would be the best place for the big surprise. Gerad really wanted Holly’s senior portrait session to be all about her, and once the question was popped and the ring presented, the dynamics of the session would definitely change! When I met with Holly to go over the plan for her senior session, she actually asked if we might be able to go to downtown Bryan after campus because she and Gerad loved that area, and how pretty it was with the Christmas decorations up. Little did she know that she played right into grand plan – making it look like it was her idea to go there!
To make sure we had it perfect, Gerad and I met in downtown Bryan a few days before the shoot to go over where everything would take place. We settled on the Christmas tree at the south end of Main Street as the perfect spot. I took a photo of Gerad down on one knee holding the ring in front of the tree to use later.
Time for Senior Photos, then…
We met at the Aggie Ring to start Holly’s session and Gerad was there to accompany us along the way. Holly had already planned for Gerad to come on the shoot and be in several of the photos. Gerad actually graduated from Texas A&M in May with his bachelor’s in Biology as well. So this was like a late senior shoot for him!
The session went as planned, with lots of photos as we moved across campus, capturing Holly (and Gerad in some cases) at lots of memorable spots.
The Big Surprise!
After we finished the campus session, we headed to downtown Bryan for the big surprise. When we arrived, we walked up to the Christmas tree where I snapped a few photos of Holly in front of the tree, then I took a couple of Holly and Gerad together in front of the tree. I called Holly over to show her the back of the camera, to ask her if these looked good to her. As I did that, I pulled up the image of Gerad down on one knee, holding the engagement ring that I had take a few days before. To say Holly was excited as she looked at that image on the back of my camera, then turned around only to see Gerad actually on one knee, holding the ring, would be an understatement! She was ecstatic! And she said YES!
I cannot think of a more fun senior session/engagement session/couples session to end 2015 with! These two are both so awesome and were so much fun to work with, and Gerad’s planning of this big surprise was just perfect!
